Blond B15 - Gav enjoying the tone of the cab and his '83 Tokai Jazz

How Blond Became...

Back in 2019, bass player, writer and producer Simon Edwards came to see me with a request to build him a bespoke bass cabinet to pair with his 1970's hand wired Wallace AC3500 XT MKIV valve amp.

I ran my own cabinetry business, and was always happy to take on new commissions. This was quite out of the ordinary and very exciting so it was an immediate yes!

Simon knew I played bass and would put my heart and soul into making something that would stand up to hard work, be good looking and sound amazing.

I'm proud to say it was another successful commission!

We chose the Eminence Legend CB158 for its old school charm; ferric driver, paper cone, copper coil, and built by one of the leading brands to boot.

The brief was to make a B15 replacement that had a modern vibe and presence. The cab needed to be compact, a tonal fit, visually arresting, and really deliver in sound quality. Simon needed to be able to direct mic it, but also use it for re-amping. The beauty of the SB15 is that it allows for any and all situations. Although primarily used for Studio work, Simon has used it for live where a decent stage presence is required.

By latching on to that old school sensibility, I made a cabinet that was extremely sturdy, and very much aligned with the specifications as laid out by Eminence. The end result was spectacular, and well in excess of anything we were expecting.

As you can imagine Simon had quite a few bass cabs, as did I, so we decided to AB them. The results were staggering. Nothing came close to the quality of the Blond, and we're talking some very reputable names. In fact, I've yet to find anything that sounds better.

Over lockdown I borrowed some money, and made another three units for people borrow and give feedback. I needed to know I wasn't dreaming.

One of the best pairs of ears we managed to persuade came attached to the ledgend that is Hugh Padgham. I took a Blond SB15 to a Gearbox Records session at RAK studios with the amazing Jazz outfit Graham Costello's Strata. Together we AB'd the SB15 against the two in house fliptop B15 cabs, and guess what... yup, they chose the BLOND!

If that doesn't convince you, get in touch and we can organise a test drive.
